Optimising Land - Use Futures for Sustainable Alternative Proteins in Australia's Circular Economy

Summary: I am currently undertaking my PhD at Deakin University in collaboration with the Land Use Futures program at the Climateworks Centre, focusing on sustainable land use and the transition to alternative proteins. With a master’s in international Land and Water Management from Wageningen University, I bring experience in sustainable land-use practices and water resource management. My previous work on sustainable agriculture and climate resilience has naturally led me to focus on alternative proteins as a solution for reducing the environmental footprint of food production.

My PhD research centers on optimizing land-use futures to support the transition to alternative proteins as part of Australia’s circular economy. The food system contributes more than one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, with traditional livestock farming being a major driver of environmental degradation. My research will explore how plant-based, cell-cultured, and fermentation-derived proteins can help reduce Australia’s environmental footprint.

I will use an integrated approach, leveraging the Land Use Trade - Offs (LUTO) model to simulate different scenarios of alternative protein adoption and its impacts by 2050. These simulations will assess key factors such as land use, greenhouse gas emissions, water consumption, and biodiversity conservation. Additionally, I will examine the economic implications, including job creation, market shifts, and trade-offs with Australia’s traditional livestock sector.

By conducting life-cycle assessments and engaging with key stakeholders, I aim to provide actionable strategies for minimizing trade-offs between agricultural production and environmental sustainability. The insights generated will not only support the development of greener supply chains but also contribute to establishing the bio-economy in Australia. My research will offer valuable recommendations for policymakers and industry leaders looking to enhance sustainability while fostering social acceptance and economic growth.
